This one is dedicated to my dear friend James, the kindest and most thoughtful man in all the world. When I met him that cold February night of 2019, after the hot Kisumu sun had finally bid us farewell and retreated to her humble abode leaving behind crimson, scarlet and orange hues in the sky which were gradually taken over by the impending darkness that was more than eager to assert her presence after the sun had long left us, I had no idea the nature of the relationship we’d develop or how much our relationship would evolve with time and turn into one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever experienced in all my years on this sphere.
This one is for the endearing friendship he extends my way with love, care, gentleness and an understanding that surpasses human reason. It’s for the unending support he accords me in all my endeavours whether feasible or not. He shows up and shows out when it comes to me like the number one fan he is, like my biggest cheerleader. It’s for the many times I’ve brought the sound of my dreams, ambitions and aspirations to his ears and without judgement he listened and dreamt with me, only waking up when I did.
So as I made my way to Nairobi Safari Walk one hot July afternoon, I couldn’t help but think of him cause if anything I was going there courtesy of him and his unending support. I wanted to take time to reminisce on our friendship and what better way to do so, than to take a long ass nature walk at Nairobi Safari Walk, which is located a stone throw away from my house in Langata and is extremely affordable.
Just like our friendship the place was beautiful. It was covered by a great many trees that doubled up as homes for the mettlesome monkeys that wandered around unbothered and completely unfazed by human presence.
I walked from point A to point B and back to A enjoying the grounds and all the animals that set it to perfection, occasionally stopping to thank God for the sublime friendship I had found in James. The type of platonic friendship that reads like your favourite novel and sounds like a movie adaptation of the same.
I wondered if I was a good a friend to him as he is to me. I realized how much I had learnt from him and from the circumstances around our friendship. With that said I can only hope to be as good or even half as good cause living up to you James is mighty hard. And if and when I do fall short, please know that it is not intentional. 🥂Here’s to friends like akina James, may we know them, may we be them.
Anyway enough about him, if you ever find yourself along langata road with 200 shillings to spare be sure to pay the animals a visit.
Very cool pictures.
